Depression
The roommate we need to evict
When we have depression it's as if there is a guy living on the couch in our mind. The Guy on the Couch takes up a lot of room in our heads. He tells the genuine us "you suck, the world sucks, and nothing is gonna change." The Guy wants us to stay inside, avoid loved ones, and eat comfort food. He's a parasite that feeds off of us and drains our energy.
Depression is often a sign that we are living an inauthentic life, and have been for a while. The Guy on the Couch says that nothing is working, everything is hopeless, and we may as well not try. The Guy is an incorrect conclusion that we have reached based on the evidence of our life.
Role of therapy in working with depression
A therapist can assist in separating the 'voices' in your head. First the Guy on the Couch must be seen for who he is. That The Guy is not the real you, but a being that takes up so much of your mind that the real you has little room to be heard. A therapist can interrupt the 'everything sucks' story that The Guy is telling. Then the therapist and the real you can partner on ways to evict depression.
